The Ring of Steel Mapping Project
In 2016, I ran a series of workshops in order to test the appetite for remembrance in the local community, and to explore the ring of steel as a potential mnemonic that could function as a shared commemorative marker for the Troubles. The workshops were held at the Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast Art School: University of Ulster, Belfast Exposed Gallery and archive, and PLACE: Center for the Built Environment. They were attended by people born in Belfast, long-time transplants and recent arrivals. At the final workshop held at PLACE, I met James Bamford, a local geographer who offered to collaborate and develop a map locating historical images of the ring of steel across time and space.
